In his speech this afternoon, Mr Massey f.aid he knew how important production, was, and he knew perfectly well the country could not carry on without production, but in the crisis that had arisen man power had to have iirsL consideration. This could not possibly be d.sputed. He was certain Cabinet would do the right thing. There would be also a more thorough combing out of lit men. He believed that a large number of eligible fit men lad not yet been called up. It might be necessary to follow the British example in increasing the military age. 'Ihe Government would also have to face the dosing down of non-essential industries and transfer workers to necessary industr.es. Every ounce of effort must be tnrown into the scale. The Government was prepared to gu the whole length with any sacrifice necessary to bring the war to the issue that all "desired. In a sefcond statement, Mr Massey paid if tho Imperial Government did not send information about the reinforcements required by the Imperial authorities, the New Zealand Government would act on its own responsibility, and send «i number based on the probable length of the war. That estimating was the present difficulty. The Government would ask Parliament and Ihe public to support it in doing its duty.
