SOLDIERS AND DRINK.
MELBOURNE, February 12. In the report ot the Committee enquiringl into the rale- of intoxicants to soldiers, Brigadier-General Williams, the Viftorian Commandant, states that six o'clock closing has reduced disorder amongst soldiors. although they still obtaiued drink after that hour. Referring to venereal disease, he says that only from three to four per cent of the cases are duo to drink, between 60 and 70 per cent boing cither teetotalers or distinctly temperate. Only a very small percentage of the absentees at embarkation are due to drin':. Other evidence showed that drink was only afiecting a very small percentage of troops before and after their return from the front.
