BREACH OF WAR REGULATIONS.
(Per Presa Association.) GREYMOUTH, Oct. 29. A/ young man named Pfaff was convicted and fined £5 under the War Regulations for issuing letters tending to interfere with the proper trading of an overseas vessel. The letters were found in the possession of two seamen, "who were arrested and convicted for desertion. Notes were given commending the seamen to persons in the Reefton district .for employment. The notes stated that the seamen were leaving a'"rummy" ship, publicly stated to be "bafck" in connection with the AustraJian strike. The defence was that there was no intentional wrongful act, but that the letters were given in good faith, believing the seamen had been legitimately discharged. The case of Palmer (sentenced to a month by the Justices for boarding an oversea vessel) was re-heard. The Magistrate reserved decision on the point whether there can be a second conviction for the same offence.
