PROPOSED'■ SHEEP DRIVE

A deputation consisting of Mesdame* trifford-JMoore, Cummins, and McKenzie waited upon the members present! with an interesting suggestion to assist the Red Cross elfort at the show. Mrs Gifford-Moore said the suggestion was a sheep drive, commencing at different points iv the district. ,lt was suggested that the farmer farther away should give a couple of sheep and drive them to his next neighbour who would perhaps add- a coup»e and drive them on. m tills way the. fleck would steadily grow on its journey Viato town. Perhaps it could be arranged-. that the drive could commence before ~ the Show.

The President considered the idea was an excellent one, which 'could be simply worked out. The sheep would soon count up when the drive started. Mr Sherrift said that last year over' ; 300 sheep were donated. Mr Lewis said that last* year some farmers away back preferred to give' value, -owing to the loss of time in driving stock. The difficulty was that the farmers were short-handed. The President moved that the suggestion as outlined by the ladies should be given effect to, and 'that a committee be set up to go into the details. Mr J. Higgie said he was one who last year made a personal effort to collect stock for patriotic purposes, and , as a result got about £150 worth.' He was prepared to offer five sheep for the present proposal, and he would be glad tc help in every way. Proceeding, Mr. Higgie expressed the opinion that droving would present difficulties at the present time. He did not think sheep could', be picked up along the road, but they would have to be collected at the convenience1 of • donors, and when the people were ready. " Now let us see how many w« can get in the room," added Mr. Higgie: . . ' ■ • The result was that . the following sheep were promised: Messrs J Higgie 5. L\ McGregor 5, G. G. Russell £, L. P. Sherriff 5, H. G. Lewis 5, D. Ross 5, J. Allison 3 lambs, C. Smith £10. The President's motion was carried.
