. ROME, August 1:0. The "Giornale" states that, the Austrian Empress, prior to th«j Papal Note, actively corresponded with, the Fope imploring peace proposals. Germany was aware of the 'preliminaries but took no direct part. The Pope intended to close his Note with a proposal for a general armistice, but Vienna considered this inopportune as revealing the Central Towers' weakness.
