GISBORNE HARBOUR.
EFFECT OF RIVER INFLUENCE
OUTER HARBOUR SUGGESTED
GISBORNE, Thursday. Reporting upon the Gisborne Harbour, Mr L .H. Reynolds condemned th e suggested excavation works in the river, and recommended as the only method of increasing the depth of water in the inner harbour the erection of" training walls and. new wharves restricting the width of the channel. Even with these, works he considered a depth of only nine feet at low water could be maintained.
Mr McDonald, the Board's engineer, concurred in Mr Reynolds' recommendations in regard to the suggested training walls. The Board has authorised a committee to make arrangements with Mr Reynolds to draw up a report and submit a plan for an outer harbour of moderat 3 dimensions, fre c of river influence and capable of accommodating coastal shipping, at as low a cost as< possible. Members agreed that, owing to the constant silting-ap of the. river, the harbour was doomed, and that the future policy of the Board must be directed towards the construction of a harbour free from river influence.
