(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, July 20. The New Zealand Alliance to-day adopted the following resolutions: .'■ "That we enter an emphatic protesi against the action of the Bay of Jplenty Licensing Committee in granting a transfer of license from Ohiwa, near Opotiki, to Manutahi, in the Tuparoa district, between the East Oape and Giscborne, and, believing the action is in contravention of the licensing laws, we request the Minister for Justice to have the matter inquired into, and if found to be illegal, to have the said license quashed; and if it be necessary, then to have legislation passed this session which will prevent further abuses in this way"; (2) "That we tender our hearty congratulations to Colonel Logan, Administrator of Samoa, for his successful efforts in abolishing th« 'wet canteen' when he founfl that it worked for the injury of tlife soldiers who are there for the defence of the Empire"; (3) "That we are;strengthened in our conviction of the need for six o'clock closing of liquor bars during the war period, by every phase of evidence which comes before ue, having corresponded with the Mayors of sixty of the largest boroughs in the Dominion, and having received answers from fifty of them, and finding that while fifteen of them prefer not to give specific answers, only six are opposed and 29 are heartily in favour of closing at 6.0; we further urge upon the Government the great national duty of legislating at once to secure the closing of bars at 6 p.m., or else provide for a referendum by which the people can decide for 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 o'clock, as the closing hour, which decision may become effective without a day's unnecessary delay. 3'
