THE LIPA BATTLE.
RUSSIANS' GALLANT FIGHT.
AUSTRIANS TERRIBLY CUT UP.
ENEMY NOW REFUSING TO FIGHT.
Received July 20, 9.10 p.m. PETROGRAD, July 20
In the fight on the Lipa the Russians forced the line ap 3 o'clock on the morning of the 16th, wading under machine gun and rifle fire in watef and marsh above their waists, and often to the armpits. The engineers laboured under heavy shellfire to construct a bridge to enable the cavalry and, guns to cross in pursuit of the enemy. The Austrian end of the bridge was a horrible place, being congested with dead antV dying and horribly wounded men. Many of the Austrians were apparently wounded by their own guns when attempting to prevent the bridging of the stream.
The Austrians now simply refuse to fight after initial resistance. Tney prefer to surrender in blocks rather than risk being cut to pieces on the retreat.
