RUSSIAN CAVALRY PUSHING ON.
PFLANZER'S COMMUNICATIONS ENDANGERED.
INTENSE ANXIETY IN HUNGARY. -
MORE REPORTS OF GERMAN UNEASINESS.
HEAVY FIGHTING AT LONGUEVAL.
BRITISH AND FRENCH GAIN FURTHER GROUND.
Germany, suffering under the pangs of internal disaffection, Ministerial and military dissention, invasions on ail fronts, and food-shortage through the blockade, has resorted again to lawless and ruthless submarinings. The British Press are apparently of the opinion that if the neighbouring neutrals go against Germany and close their borders, she will, in sheer desperation, attack the neutrals, and capture or commandeer cargoes and supplies. It is quite passible that, if reduced to that state of final extremity where defeat is inevitable, she may decide to precipitate the climax and embroil Denniark, 4t? Holland, and also Sweden, as an excuse for capitulation. At the present stage of the Allies' progress, however, the Allies appear to consider their best move 'S to use the influence of the neutrals to stop Germany's submarining methods,
The news that General Letchitsky's cavalry had crossed the Rodno Pass and were threatening to cut General Pflanzer's communications, apparently came as a surprise to the Austro-Hungarians. The Russians are endeavouring also to cross the Carpathians via the JabJonitza Pass, according to today's cables. Letchiteky's- object, apparently, is to cut the enemy's communications via the Jablonitza and Paniyr Passes, and cut off their retreat into Hungary. This thrust at their communications will probably result In Die quid: retrea*t of Pflanzer's army, anQ leave the way open for a more sudden Russian stroke in the direction of Lemberg. » '
The re-taking of portions of Deville Wood and part of Longueval by the Germane gave them shortlived satisfaction, as they were quickly ejected from the wood, and though not yet entirely ousted from Longueval, - they wiJI probably shortly be expelled. The Germans are now reported to be making furious attacks on the British advanced positions, with a view to retarding their offensive. These attacks are also being promptly repelled at *.strees and on the Somme by the French, and generally the news from the bomme sectors good. The fact that two more German generals on th« nest front have been superseded tells its own story.
