PALMERSTON LOSES ITS HEAD.
AN EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR
(Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. July 7
A rumour originated in Palmerston North to-night that the Kaiser and Crown Prince had been assassinated by a mob in Berlin. The rumour soon reached the Opera House, where Mr. W. H. George was delivering a lecture on "Our Boys in Egypt" to a packed house. The Mayor announced the sensational news from the platform, and tiie audience rose in a body, cheered, and sang the National Anthem. The ambulance men at Awapuni camp gave a haka, and there were indescribable scenes of enthusiasm. Finally the "Manawatu Times" Office was mug up, and the rumour was contradicted. How the rumour originated is a mystery. Some say tnat it was featured on" the screens of picture shows, hiit the picture managers say that their (iist intimation was from the Opera House. A probable explanation of the rumour is that news of the rioting in Berlin was being posted in the "Times" window. i
