DEATH OF MR E J. ARMSTRONG
Mr Edward' John Armstrong, an oid and highly estaemed citizen of tai txerston North, passed away rt Gisborne last night in his 83rd. year. Deceased was a civil engineer by profession. In his1 ear'y-manhood-He eng«tied in survey worK on a. railway in the South of Spain, migrating to N?w Zealand in the mid-'seven.;Ues. He entered the service of the Government, one of his "vorks being the' sur^ev n\ the railway route beween • Longburn and Levin. On Mr Armstrong's advice the line was taken through Longburn instead of viaFoxton. -Bui's and Greats ford, as was then proposed. Subsequently he assisted in the; engineering schemes of Manawatu^ and it was due to his big drainage schemes that so much swamp was converted into fine grazing country. As a Borough Councillor of Palmerston he rendered very valuable service, and the news of his demise will be received throughont,the Manawatu with feelings of extreme regret.
