MARTON CARNIVAL WEEK.
Although the figures were not-avail-able to-day, it is confidently expected that the gala and the crowning of Queen Joyce as Queen of the Carnival will produce at least over £200. P n.c very willing giver .;to the Patriotic functions at Marton is " Charlie" (Lum Kee and Co.) "Charlie" has a brown skin but a white heart, and it is doubtful if there is a more generous Chinaman helper on the Coast than Marton's, leading fruiterer. His stall a few weeks ago produced over £20, and at the gala he handed over the profit of £3 to the funds. The total proceeds from the produce stall in charge of Mrs Frank Spencer amounted to £20 17b 4d. Most of the visitors in connection with, the crowning ceremony left for home to-day, and now in Lower Rangitikei the community is looking forward to the crowning ■ceremony at Bidls, the/lipnia of the Qiiiefen. Ope cannot pass from the ceremony without specially referring to the splendid work of the organiser, Mr Sam Gibbons. Apart altogether from the brain work he put into the concern, he expended a vast amount of time and energy in attending to the thousand-and-one things which required supervision, advice and direction. He was the strong man of the show, and everything he did he did well, his only object being to makje the affair a big success for the sake of the sick and wounded soldiers. Tn this noble resolve Ins nft'orts were well seconded by a large band of workers. There was not a drone in the company; all worked unitedly, hence the great sunr-ess achieved." "
