ASSAULT-AT-ARMS.
NEXT THURSDAY'S GREAT DISPLAY.
In connection with the grand assault, at arras to be heidon the JVanganui racecourse on Thursday next, the /th October, it promises to be the nnest military and athletic display ever grren in Wanganui. It will be under the direction of Captain L. McLaglen, inventor of the system of bayonet nghting used by the British troops, and he will be assisted by a. specially tramed body of and Cadets. The programme will include the toUowin^ items:—Massed bands, grand March Past, bandsmen's race, realistic eham fight, massed bayonet disp,."y, catching the greasy pig, riding at gibbets Lloyd Lindsay <jompetiton, tug-of-war on horseback,, mounted wrestling, bending competition, Balaclava melee, race for a bride, and sword v. bayonet on horseback. In addition oo the above .Captain McLaglen will endeavour to break his previous worlds record by cutting eight sheep in halt at a single gallop, and he will also give a test of physical endurance by withstanding the combined Pull^g power of two draught horses. The display is!in aid of our sick and wounded soldiers, and that fact, coupled *n»n the most attractive afternoons sport to be provided, should ensure a large attendance of the public. . . The entertainment to be held in the Opera House at night will be one of the best put before the public here for a long time, and should serve as a fitting finale to what should prove n most successful carnival.
