ARMIES OF EUROPE AT WAR.
. Speaking of the above pictures, tlic "Auckland Star," jVligus'o 2nd, Mi,y& .)— Unusually large audiences attended at the Princess Theatre to-day to witness the screening for the first time in Auckland of a magnificent series of pictures depicting the armies of Europe at war. The pictures shown in this great film make such a soul-stirring representation of; tlie deeds tfor which the armies •of the Allies have won undying fame, that it seems to bring the war close to dne in a way that nothing else.but the real thing could do. The tranip of the troops across the miles of mud and slush, the bursting in mid-air of the shells, and the sell- pressed intr-jisity of the indi--vidual deeds of heroism are brought LtiiiiC t(i th..> comprehension with grjat force. Aeroplanes, the slow, lumbering dk'iriil^c's, the ponderous Dreadnoughts, the torpedo boats and 'destroyrs, the wonderful work of the Red Cross Brigade, and other such features of the pictures all are JJirown on the screen in a moving spectacle that gives a realistic touch to the entertainment. - An ' added attraction is the description by the photographer who took the majority of the pictures of each scene as it> appeared on the screen and his account of the happenings at the front makes the pictures vastly more interesting, and brings home to the audience a much clearer conception of the terrors of the .war in progress than might be gained from the pictures itself. The lecturer made a strong impression on his hearers when he told of the dangers which the operator had to face in order to secure for public presentation the pictures which result from the turning of the handle of the cinema camera. Indeed, the pictures contained in the film, "The Armies of Europe at War," are said to be the most daring war photographs that have been won by the cinema operators in proximity to the battlefield. Photographers have to take very great risks with flying bullets round them in order to obtain these records of actuajl sighting. These_ wonderful pictures will be shown in Wanganui at the Empress Theatre on Thursday afternoon next commencing at 2.30, and every afternoon and evening until Saturday next.
