In connection with the death of Captain Smart, who, instead of deserting in India, as was thought at the time, joined as a private under the-' name of Hardy and wgnt to France at the outset of the-war,-Lieut. Barter describes the captain's exploit as follows:—He was almost ten yards from : the German trench when he was wounded in, the right islioulder. I shouted, --"Hardy, go back:" He answered, "It's all right. I'm lefthanded." Then he nx-sheeT off and commenced to s\am bombs at the enemy and went on like, that for 20 or - 30 yards, when he was shot.
