MAOKENSEN'S GREAT EFFORT.
NEARLY SUCCEEDED
RUSSIANS' MAGNIFICENT RALLY
AN IRRESISTIBLE WAVE, OF BRAVERY.
ENEMY DRIVEN BACK TWENTY
MILES
Received 5-5 p.m., August 15
LONDON.

The "Daily MaiPs" Petrograd. correspondent says it transpires that Mackonsen's effort to break the Russian line on the Bug nearly succeeded in cutting off large Russian forces.. Mackensen forced his way to Vlodtt.va regardless of cost, and the Russian position was precarious. General1 Alexeff realised the situation and rushed forward all his available troops and guns with orders that Vlodava must be re-taken. The troops obeyed magnificently, retook the town, and drove back the enemy twenty miles in three days, and are still holding him. This irresistible wave of Russian bravery must be accounted as one of the most glorious episodes of the war.
