AN OLD RUMOUR.
AND AN EXPLANATION
(Times and Sydney Sun Cables.)
LONDON, April 30. In explanation of the early rumour of the passage through Britain of Russian troops, it is stated that a large number of Russian officers visited Britain to buy munitions of war and to act as attaches to tlie staffs leaving for the front. _ A number of soldier servants accompanied them. They travelled from Archangel to Scottish ports. At the same time the War Office shifted the camps of Territorials. The trains were hand-signalled and moved at night with the blinds drawn. The engine drivers were ignorant regarding the loads they pulled. Letters from Scottish railway officials to friends in the south spoke of a lot of Russians travelling, and rumour made a handful of Russians into an enormous army.
