Press Association.) ROTORUA, April 12. ,lhe great Waimangu Geyser, 17 miles-, from Rotorua, which has been quiescent tor eleven years, became active this afternoon. At about 2.10 p.m. an eruption occurred which blew a hole 80 yards^, jpng and 75 yards wide in the flat ™owff Frying Jan, just near the-blow-hole, familiar to visitors as a scene - or photographic activity. - The new crater, which is about 20ft. deep, contains 20 huge mud boilers/ throwing debris to a height of 30 feeC ?xi en great steam holes sendinetorth thick volumes of steam. The erup- - t^ n f e»t forth mud and sand over thehill behind the Inferno, proving that the shot, must have gone to a height . ot at least a thousand feet, and it isreported that sand was sent as far as\f Sotomahana, 3J miles away. Mr R. H. Ingle, who has been connected witlr the thermal district for 20----years, ot which eight were spent at Waimangu as Government guide, is of theopinion that the outburst is not a mere > spasm, and that a continuance of activity may be anticipated. The old crater, which occupied an acre and a quarter, broke, jout i n 1900 and ceased erupts ing in 1904, Shots of 1000 ft were frequent,, the; record being 1500 ft.
