MAXWELLTOWN'S EFFORTS.

ACTIVE STEPS TAKEN

A patriotic meeting was held at Maxwell on Monday, August 31, to consdtier ways and means of augmenting the war fund. The meeting was well attended and.was opened by Mr W. Morrison, who referred to the .way.-in.. which the colonies were supporting the Mother Country in the pi'esent crisis. It was proposed by Mr Davis and-seconded by lVliry'Ailexander "tiiat -Bhiis mjeeting of1 Maxwell settlers dV their utmost to help the British Empire in the present crisis, and' for this purpose' subscriptions,< be taken up in the r.oqm and "canvassers be appointed to canvass the district for money'and other contributions." The motion was put to the meeting : aw* was oaiTied unanimously, and Mr Billmghurst, haying, been selected! as treasurer, subscriptions, donated to both expeditionary force and food fund; were collected to the amount of £100. Previous donations of a draught horse and «v troop horse and £10 had already been made.
