WANGANUI J.C. WINTER MEETING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS T

(BY "EARLY BIRD.") Special train arrangements, have been made for the meeting on Thursday and Saturday., At the time of writing the weather is still rat bar wintry, and there is a promise cf further rain, so that the prospects for Thursday are not of the brightest. Dus'cin'sjXtd.. will have charge of the luncheon. and afternoon tea stalls, and the public can rest assured that they will I>3 w<ell catered for.

For many years past the Wanganui Garrison. Band has supp-ied the music for the local race gatherings, and they will again'be in attendance to-morrow and on Saturday to render a choice programme of music. Tiie Egmont-Wanganhi Hunt meet on Fiiday, the*22nd inst., at Mr Cameron's, '• iVlarangai." Members are requested to note, the date —Friday, the 22nd, between the race days. Waterworks, who has accepted in the Hack Steeples, is now reported to be> suffering from a bruised fetlock and will probably be unable to fulfil his engagements at the coming meeting. The siabie companions Bercola and Cornelian have been supported by "their connections to win a big sum on Thursday. Both these horses have been giving capital displays on the local tracks and wil be solidly supported in the Steeples and; Century double on the day. If local support can be taken as any criterion .PootiUion simply must* win the Borough) Handicap on Thursday, but backers should remember that they cannot coil-act untai the race is won. Should the Aavance —Brown Spec horse duly land home, the penciLlers will be hard bit, as Postillion has been coupled with, everything worth while.

The Conncdly Handicap promises to be an exciting race, and it is very hard to say what will be sent out favourite. Goldsize, lied Book, Bertrada, Leonta, Byron, (Jiiuklar and First Consul are sure to be well backed on the day, but of these, Goldsize has been moving very attractively on the local tracks, and if he can reproduce this form on Thursday ibe will lead the field a merry dance. Through a misunderstanding, the connections of Gladiole failed to accept for the daughter of St. Clements in the Borougji Handicap,- the owner evidently leaving the final payment to the trainer, and; th'S latte»- thinking that th? owcer would make the acceptance let it go. When the list of*aoceptors was published yesterday morning, the owner and trainer. i\ter>? both very disagresal>!y. surprised to find Gladiole's name missing from the Borough Handicap. - Mr S.'Breretpn. the popular Waverley owner-trainer, was somewhat dismayed to find his mare Ineuru missing from th© Borough Handicap when th.3 list of acceptances was published yesterday. He straightway liad! inquiries made as to the omission, because he had telegraphed from Waverley accepting for Jaeuru in t>ba race. Mr Brereton had put in the wire at 7.15 p.im. en Monday, and according to the time on the message it was reeenrad in Wanganui nfty minutes later. There must have been some stunid blundering somewhere, for although the Jockey Club's offio3 was open ivp to 9.50 pvm. the wire yrzv net'delivered until Tuesday morning-. Of course, Ineuru's accepts anoj could not then be peceptedi, which is very hard luck for Mr Brereton.
