To feed 6000 territorials-nand after a day's drill the average territorial is not the possessor of a poor appetite by any * means —is. a task which puts a considerable tax upon the resources of the commissariat. The proposition has to be faced at the end of this month by the Defence Department in connection with the Takapau camp. Contracts for the supply of provisions have been let to various firms at Takapau, Hastings, Dannevirke iand Palmerston North, and the estimated quantities of the supplies required will be as follows: —Bread 81,2501b5., meat (fresh) 97,5Q01b5., butter 16,2501b5, cheese 4OSolbs, tea 3050 lbs, coffee 20301b5, sugar 16,2501b5, potatoes 60,0001b5, onions 16,2501h&, jam 16,2501b5, oatmeal 8130lbs, milk (fresh) 4070 gallons, milk (condensed) one tin per 8 men per diem if required, salt 20301b5, pepper 1131bs, flour 48001bs. In addition to the above, each territorial is allowed two pence per day for the purchase of such articles as currants, raisins, or vegetables, as desired. Of course, the money does not come direct to him. but is credited to his unit for the purpose mentioned. There will be the usual canteens —one for each brigade. The cook-houses are at present in the course of construction, and next week Captain Hamilton and Staff Ser-geant-Major Ostler leave for the site of l.he camp "to take delivery of the supplies, the first consignment of which are due to arrive about the 17th.
Territorials will also be glad to hear that the Department is making arrangements for the supply of more straw for the tents than previously. Of the other supplies contracted for, the following figures are of interest: —Tents will be supplied with 13-501bs of candles and over 40 tons of straw. Estimates of the horse feed are as follows: —Oats 2700 bushels, chaff (oat sheaf) 9G tons, hay 48 tons, and bran 12 sacks.
A cinematograph show will be running each night at the camp.
