NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By our Special Reporter), i FEILDING, April 13. Punters hopped right on to it to I commence with, Ngarua being sent out a better favourite than Grey Guard. A wretched start was made, General Madero went out in front, but after a furlong he had been de- ; posed by Ngarua, who quickly put space between the rest of the field. The field closed up at the bottom "of the straight, but the issue lay between Ngarua and General Madero, the for-
I mer winning by a long neck, Pal tronata a couple of lengths away. Next to finish were Mystified, Vladi- ■ neau, and White Plume. • ■ ; There were three withdrawals from ( the Ma'ngaone Stakes, leaving a field of eleven to leave the post. Once 1 ( again backers were on to the right , thing in Ineuru, who was made a | slightly 'better favourite than Altcar Adroit and Lady Volga were also inquired for. The start was this time an excellent one, although Epworth got badly left. Gladiole made the early running from Ineuru and Lady i Volga. At the straight entrance, 1 Play-off and Lady Louisa moved up. I Play-off challenged the favourite at j the distance, and in a clinking finish • Ineuru got the verdict by a nose, with Lady Louisa third, a length away. Adroit was fourth, being followed home by Altcar, jLady Volga, and The Great Mogul. The nine acceptors started in th© Kawa Kawa Hurdles, which saw Aruake made a good favourite, and there was also money to be had about : The Rover and Rill. Timothy set out to make the pace, but fell back after a milu cad been traversed giving way to Huia, who led Timothy and Rill. At the six furlongs the latter cried enough. Huia led into the straight, i winning by about ten lengths from Timothy, with Maku five lengths a- , way.' Then came the favourite, Aru'ake, Riill Ibhar, Kurnalpi and Passive, with The Rover last, i Eight faced the starter in the Taonui Hack Hurdles. Papalitz was backed as if the race was all over, carrying over a thousand tickets. There was also a mild demand for pasteboards bearing the numbers of Florist and Stockade. Stockade .went put early to make the pace, and led round and past" the stand from Jackman and Jack-of-the-Green. Papalitz moved up, and at the back had run up to Jackman, whom he passed, and then set after Stockade, the latter leading into the straight. At the distance, Young, on Papalitz, had the* whip out. but Stockade was finishing well and had little difficulty in winning by a clear. length. Jackman was third some twenty lengths away. Master Malaehi, Florist, Clemency/ and Okahu finished in that order. ! All the acceptors went to the post in the Cup, which was a good betting race. Sir Knox carried ten more | tickets than Otahu, with the others all well backed; the topweight, Birk- • line, being the outsider of the field. Otahu got away badly. Immer led {Lady Laddo out from the barrier and into the straight, these two being in 'front passing the stand, with Guiding iWay, Moutoa Girl, and Otahu next, with Sir Knox last. Fair Rosamond ' moved up to second place at the halfmile, but at three furlongs Manawakaha had assumed command, and led ■by a couple of lengths into tne I straight. Birkline mnd Sir Knox had , both moved up. Manawakaha had the race in his keeping at the distance, and won by two and a half lengths from the fast finishing Sir I Knox, who beat Birkline by a head for second money. Guiding Way was fourth, and next to finish were Fair Rosamond, Otahu, Immer, Moutoa Girl, and Lady 'Laddo. The scratching of Papamarama and Ladify left eight to start in the I Onepuhi Hack Welter. F. Hall's Raupani was considered a good thing and backers punted accordingly. Others to receive attention were Sir Donald and Styrax. The latter played up at the barrier, and got the worst of an excellent start. John Willie, on the rails, quickly shot to the front, and led all the way. At the four furlongs Sir Fisher and Victoria were John Willies nearest attendants. John Willie led into the straight from Victoria and Styrax. and going on he won easily from Victoris by two and a half lengths, with Styrax half a length back in third berth. Next to finish, wero Glenorchy, Raupani,- Sir Fisher, Sir ' Donald, with Combustion last. Tho I favourite was badly knocked about ! during the race when endeavouring to
jgo through the field, otherwise he i must have been closer up at the finish. The Onga Hack provided a good dust-up. Four defections left a halfdozen starters. Miss Kelly, who had drawn No. 1 position, was made the favourite, Brunswick and Tiora being next in demand. Brunswick was first away, but soon, gave way to Martingale and Tiora. At the bottom of the straight Brunswick was up to the leaders, but an outsider in Kurapai came up on the, rails and won easily 'by two lengths. Brunswick was close up, third, Next to finish were Roseblush and Tiora, with the favourite last. The last race on the card produced nine starters, among which the betting was fairly evenly divided. The contest was a walk-over for the fay- • ourite, Lady Louisa, who had little difficulty in landing the stake by a length and a half from Sanguinary. ■Monologue was a good third. Nexi to finish were Alecto, Smilax, LuL ruline and Grattan.
