HOSTEL FOR GIRLS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —What is regarded as a long-felt want in Wanganui, is to be shortly inaugurated under the auspices of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The large number of girls and young women who have perforce to come to the town for employment, and thus leave their homes, is increasing year by year, arid a great difficulty confronts them when arriving in the larger towns in getting suitable board and lodgings. The W.C.T.U. have started a .most laudable scheme on the lines of the Young Women's Christian Association in the larger towns, and have taken a large house situated in Campbell Street, which will accommodate about ten young women. It is proposed to make a charge sufficient to cover working expenses, for board and lodging, and every effort will be made to make a real, home for those young girls who of necessity have to leave ikith ; anld kin ito pursue their various avocations. The women who are promoting this object are anxious that the boarders shall not only have a comfortable home, but they will find themselvesamongst congenial companions and healthy influences. Subscription lists may be found at Mr Upton's shop; Avenue, and Mr Gage's, grocer, Glasgow St., and the assistance of all who are in sympathy with the movement is earnestly solicited.—l am etc.,

M. McKenzie, Sec. W.C.T.U
