OBITUARY.

MB. W. A. PAWSON

The news that Mr. William A. Pawson passed away yesterday morning will be received with deep regret by a very large circle of friends. The deceased gentleman, who had heen in ill-health for the past three months, underwent art operation at B.lverdale Private Hospital a few days -go, buc despite care and attention gradually san^:, and passed away yesterday morning. The late Mr Pawson, who was the second son of Mr John Pawson. the well-known old resident, was born in Wanganui where he resided till the time of his* death. In 1879 he entered the employ of Messrs H. I. Jones and Son, with whom he remained till the time of his death, when he held the position of manager of the firm's big wholesale business. From small beginnings he had seen the business grow to its present dimensions, and he had always thrown his best ability and energy into it. Apart from business, Mr Pawson took a keen interest in the musical and athletic life of the town. He was a well-known figure on the local "boards," having been a prominent member of fhe Wanganui Musical and Dramatic Society. Apart from his histrionic ability his fine voice won him success in various comic operas. Among these may be mentioned his "Rip" in "Rip Van Winkle." He was also one of the original members of the Wanganui Liedertafel, in which he was prominent till the time of his death. In his younger days Mr Pawson played football and took part in rowing, representing the U.B.C. at several regattas. He also took a keen interest in volunteering, being a'sergeant in the old Wanganui Rules. Mr Pawson was one of the early members of the Maroro Golf Club and latterly was a devotee of th© bowling green, being a valued member of the Wanganui Bowling Club. Mr Pawson was one of the promoters of the Wanganui Commercial Travellers' Club He was also an enthusiastic Freemason, being a Past Master of the Tongariro Lodge, and an oflicer of the Wellington District Grand Lodge under the English Constitution. In private life Mr Pawson's likeable nature made him deservedly popular and many will mourn nis passing. To the bereaved father, his sisters (Mrs W. Rodwell, Mrs R. Remington and Miss Pawson) and his brother (Mr T. Pawson), we extend our sincere sympathy in their great loss. The funoral, which will be Masonic, will take place at 3 o'clock this afternoon.
