RANGITIKEI-OROUA NOTES.

MARTON, Marcih 9. Two Chinese, named Sue Gang and Joe Lee appeared before Mi- L. G. Reid, S.M.. at the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston this morning, charged with smokiug opium. The former was also charged with permitting the smoking of the opium. Detective Sergt. Quirk© stated that on Saturday morning in company with Detective Sweeney, he visited the house in Main £i>. in which the two Chinese lived, and going quietly into a room they found the two men with opium pipes in their hands, lamps lit for smoking, and a quantity of opium in their possession. Detective Sweeney gave corroborative evidence. Sue Gang, on oath, stated that Joe Le e was Buffering from asthma, and he was just taking a taste of the opium to relieve an attack of the trouble. The opium had been left behind by a Chinaman who had previously lived in the house. The Magistrate found both the men guilty of smoking opium, and fined each of them £2 with costs 7s. On the cecond charge Sue Gang- was convicted and discharged. Mrs R. E. Watson, of Taonui Street, Palmerston Norton, passed away on Sunday at th e age of 56 years. She had been a resident of Palmerston for the last 25 years. Besides her husband, the late Mrs Watson leaves one son and two unmarried daughters to mourn their loss. The interment, which was of a private nature, took plaoe on Monday afternoon, t-he Rev A. Doull conducting an impressive burial service.

Good progress is being made with the erection of the new ferro-ooncrote factory for the Awahuri Dairy • Company, at Kauwhata. This factory, when completed will be on c of the most up-to-date in the district, and the company are to be congratulated on the enterprise they have shown in erecting such a fine building.
