CIVIL BUSINESS.
ACTION TO RECOVER DAMAGES
An 'feeho of The visit of H.M.S. New Zealand to Wanganui was heard at the Supreme Court yesterday. On that day a mian was injured on the Head's Road, at Gonville as the result of being knocked, down by a motor-car driven by a Maori. The outcome was a civil Supreme Court action heard here at last sittings, when the man who was knocked down, Reginald Connon, sued for and recovered damages against Mawae Tauri, the driver of the car. These damages and the costs, together totalling £160 10s 6d, have not yet been paid, and yesterday the hearing of a summons for their recovery was heard. Mr O. E. Mackay appeared for Connon, and Mr N. G. Armstrong for Tauri. Tauri was called, and gave evidence*as to his means. His Honour stated that the man ought to pay ,but the difficulty was to fix the amount of the instalments, as it was evident that he was not in a position to play the whole amount. Tauri did not seem anxious to furnish the Court with particulars of his rents, lands, etc. • The alpjjjlication was aidjournejd 'till Tuesday to allow the defendant to make up a- statement of 'his finances or possessions.
