MR. MERRIMAN'S VIEWS.

MAKING HEROES OF FAILURES. CAPETOWN, February 12, Mr Merriman. in the Assembly, said that the deporteds were enemies of society, but a. grave .error had-been made in deporting them without trial. This had made heroes !of the sorriest lot of failures ever seen. The right course was to bi-ing the deporteds back, and try them. The 'Government had struck two deadly blows at the Empire. In the first place they got into a mess with the Indian Empire, and now they were sending nine dangerous agitators to inflame r.iiblic opinion when Britain was on .the very verge of civil war. The majority of -the wives of the deporteds are awaiting their (husbands' instructions. Mesdames Bain and Poutsma have accepted free passages.
