The Hawera police are investigating an alleged sticking-up case at Owaiawa. A man wearing a mask is supposed to have entered a settler's house and frightened the occupants.

A man and _a jyoman, charged with intemperance, were convicted and discharged at the Ivlagistrawfs Court on Saturday morning. Two women, arrested for insobriety spent the week-end in the lock-up.

The inclement -weather yesterday afternoon deterred the Garrison Band from playing its promised programme. The band will, however, render a choice selection of music at the rotunda next Sunday, when a collection will be taken up to provide funds for Christmas cheer for the inmates of the Jubilee Home.

The executive committee- of the Hawkc's Bay Dominion Scouts are working hard to complete arrangements for the first Boy Scouts' combined rally arid camp. Scouts from Waiioa, Hastings, jHayelQck North, Rissington, Danneviirke, Palmersion, etc., .are to be present. The Dominion Chief Scout, Lieut.-Ootlonel Cosgrove, V.D., is also expected to be present.

The current issue of "Scribner's Magazine," in addition to being, as usual, beautifully illustrated, contains an exceptionally interesting budget of reading matter. Theodore Roosevelt gives '• The Life History of the African Rhinoceros and Hippopotamus." Vernon Lee contributes "An English Writer's Notes on England," and fiction is represented by some of the brightest waiters of the day.

In the Swedish drill competition held at Wellington an Saturday the team from No. 5 Company Nets Zealand1 Engineers commanded by Captiam C. P. Ryan, took first prize." The team consisted of Lieut. R. 0. Brydon. Sappers Smith, Anderson, Styles, Jenner,- Pocock, Matheson, McGrail. Hay and Annabell.

An aiinusing incident occurred at Chavannes' Hotel on Saturday evening. A youthful unbeliever, eyeing one of the Braemars' play bills,, declared that no man living could mesmerise or hypnotise him, as it was only the weakwiled that could be hypnotised. The Professor, who with some...friends was within hearing of the clever one, got into conversation with him. After.- a iittle persuasion the Professor got him to lock his hands, and applied the mesmeric testj with the result that the unbeliever turned out a first-class subject, and caused no end of merriment to the spectators. When released he made a hurried exit, keeping at a respectful distance from the Professor.

In accordance with an arrangement that had been come to, the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, ■suid the- Salvation Army held special services yesterday in observance of the Bible in Schools propaganda. In the devotional exercises and the sermons, special reference was made to the League's aims- At Christ Church yesterday morning the secretary of the local branch of the League, the Rev. Cyril Harvey, said in the course of a sermon that 55 churches in the "Waiiganui district, 60 churches in the. AVe-llington. district and 135 churches in the country districts, or 240 churches in the Wellington diocese were participating in the observance, while churches throughout the Dominion were also takiug part. He said that (cards advocating tho aims Oi the League had been signed by 112,----(;'J0 people in New Zealand. Of these only' 1800 had signed them in Wangan'ui. Mr Harvey divided the people into three divisions, namely, the advocates of the League's proposals, their opponents, and the indifferent.
