RUGBY IN AMERICA
The following item on the New Zea-land-St. Mary's match is interesting:— The game was not played in an absolutely friendly spirit, and at times play was very hard. Mr. Hill, who had refereed in the big inter-Varsity game between Stanford and California, had control of the match, and although he kept the land the players well in Land, some of his decisions did not meet with general approval from the New Zealanders, and occasionally led to heated arguments. The game was, however, a. vevy amusing one from the spectators' point of view, and teemed with haimorous incidents at the expense of the players. McDonald once emerged1 from a scrum completely covered—head and ■all —in mud an inch thick. It was nlso amusing to see Taylor trying to start passing rushes, for the ball, at times, weighed over 151b.., and when it was transferred to Gray it nearly knocked him over. McDonald played his best game so far, and his dashes for the line when about syds. away were splendid. He scored four tries out of the 11, and ho thoroughly deserved them all. Murray also played a. good game, and ceetned to revel in playing in the mud. Ho also scored three tries, his last one being a very pretty piece of work. Of the hacks little can be said, as it was entirely a forward gome. Goal-kicking was not attempted. as the ball could not be kicked; more than 3ft high owing -to its weight.
