FIRE ON A GOAL HULK.

At ten minutes to four this morning the Lyttelton Fire Brigade was called out to attend an outbreak of fire on board tho Blackball Coal Co.'s steel hulk Waiiti, which was lying on thd. e:ist. side of No. 7 wharf and alongside the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s liner Opawa. 'Die fire was confined to the boiler house on the after deck. The brigade turned cut promptly and when they arrived on the scene the boilerhou.se war-, a mass of flames. Notwithstanding the Tact that the crew of the Opawa were already playing the f.hip's hostt on the conflagration. A good supply of water was available, and after about half an hour's work the niigade wns successful in quenching the flames. It is not known as to how the outbreak occurred, as it is stated that when coaling operations en board the Opawa ceased at midnight everything appeared to be perfectly safe. Th<> whole of the boiler-house will have to be renewed, and it is more tJir.n likeIv that repairs will have to be effected tn the boiler and some of the machinery. No damage was done to the Opawa which sailed this morning for the "Blnn" an-1 Suva. The timely action of the crew of the latter vessel however, saved the situation from becoming a somewho.t serious one.
