A DEAD LOSS

WANGANUI COUNCIL'S ACTION
There is a strong move in the direction of closing the ferry at Upokongaro ferry. In accordance with instructions, tho engineer, Mr A. C Mannington, submitted figures at yesterday's meeting of the Wauganni County Council showing tlio losd at which the ferry had been run.
The figures iare. —Year 1911-12 —Expenditure, including cost of punt, £2G4 IPs 3d ; receipts, t011.*., £54 16s 9d, contribution, Waitorara County Council £14. Year 1912-13—Expenditure £224 6s; .receipts tolls £103 17s Id, contribution Waitotara County Council £15. Year 1913-14 (uncompleted)— Expenditure £74 oss Gd, 1-tcoipts £17 6s 3d. Tho total expenditure on the ferry during (he past three years amounted to £483 Vh lid. while the receipts totalled £210 j (is Id, showing a deficit, of £273 10s lOd. j Cr. Higsie moved " That the ferry be »iTosed." Ho said that this was the only way to bring the Waitotam County Council up to the scratch. The forry did tho service of a county bridge. If it was a brideo the Waitotara County Council would have to pay half, whereas it only contributed £15 towards its up-keep. IF that body wvis gointr to neglect its ratepayers, it must suffer I Cr. Its ratepayers were chiefly effected. Ho considered that the Waitotara County Council and the Mangawhero Road Board should be given an opportunity to conler on the matter with a view to coming to souio arrangement. j Cr.
