MARTON, July 23. It is estimated that tho recent fii'e in Htintervillo caused about £30 worth of damago to plate-glass windows as tho result hi tho heat. Ovev fifty lambs are now to be seen frisking about on one farm at Mt. Stewart. It is understood that the Cheltenham Dairy Co. will this year be able to pay off its overdraft, and* pay a dividend of five per cent.
Mr. Dugdale, of thq Hawera F-lectric Light Company has just paid -a visit to Feilding, and ho is convinced that tho Borough is admirably adapted for tho initiation of an electric lighting scheme. Ho is of the opinion that the system could bo installed for about £10,000. Huntervillo's library has now been installed in tho club's 'buildings, Mr Abet, caretaker,-having-provided accommodation for the books, which n jmber ever 1.000. It appears that a good many ore- missing, and efforts are to bo made to rejeover the same. Feilding Borough Council is giving four per cent, on amounts deposited with the Council from £2o and upwards. Thoso who have small sums to invest are- embracing tho opportunity, and so far*oyer £1000 has boen deposited with tho Council, who allow the money to be withdrawn at call.
At Feilding Court to-day D. Higgin claimed from J. Cqrlett the sum of £3 35., alleged to bo duo on a deal of stock. Higgin had disposed of four heifers to Corlett. and took as part payment seven weaners. The dispute arose around tho prices fixed for tho heifers and tho weaners. After a good ,doal of evidence judgment war, given for defendant, £1 los. costs Leing also allowed.
With a view to improving the grading of Marton Borough roads, the Council has authorised Mr. Wilson. Foreman, to engage tho Rangitikei County Council's road-grader to re-grade all tho principal streets whero necessary. Tho Dandies' No. 2 and No. 3 Companies, also George Marlowe's, have booked dates for cho Marton Town Hall, and J. and N. Tait have been making inquiries for dates before the end of the year.
In connection with tho re-payment of the Town Hall and Fire Brigade loan of £1500, Mr. Knigge, Town Clerk of Marton. made inquiries from thePublic Trust Office as to the terms upon which tho Council could procure a loan of liko amount, and^ he has now received a very favourable reply, to the effect that if the security is satisfactory a loan could be entertained art five per cent., plus one per cent, sinking fund for a term as may be arranged up to, say, 40-years. The letter is now to bo considered by the Finance- Committee, with power to act.
