A TERRIBLE SCENE. INADEQUATE FIRE ESCAPES. • Received 10.56 p:m., July 23. NEW YORK, July 23. The latest from Binghamton places Iho death.roll at fifty. After nightfall searchlights were utilised to search for tho bodies,'. whereof tho majority were recovered. TJ^ gedy occurred- with, terrific swiftness. The whole buildipg :was a mass of flames m a few minutes. ' "•"'"' Twenty women heeded the alarm and escaped easily. Others dallied, thinking the alarm was merely fire-drill., The girlg stod six deep around* the windows screaming in agony as the ■smoke and flames reached them. ■ \. j ; Many descended the fire-escapes, only -to f&U into the flames bursting out from the, sides of the building: | >•■ The escapes were apparently inadequate. When the girls cfewded them, many fell off. Others thtew themselves from the lower windows, more than si dozen escaping with broken limbs.
