DR. HATHERLY'S CASE

To the Editor. Sir, —I think that a public meeting .should bo called to protest against the un-British way Dr. Hatherly was treated. If, as has been asserted, lie was getting old in years, why could he not have received the kindly consideration duo to a man who lias served his day and generation well, whose skill, sympathy, and generosity has been most marked during his long professional period in Wanganui. Fancy a man not t receiving a possible chance in these days, especially from a body of men who claim to bo just and fair. The members* certainly did not shew it in this case, and the hundreds of people m TVan^anui who have just cause to bo thankful to Dr. Hathorly for skilfulness and kindly sympathy should rise v-> en masse and protest in a most decided manner against the iniquitous treatment meted out to this kindly gentleman. I am. etc.. LOVER OF FATR PLAY.

To the Editor. Sir.—Re Dr. Hatherly's enforced resignation. The public, of course, will reouire some more definite Teasohs for the Board's remarkable action. As to Dr. Hatherly's abilities as an anaesthetist you will,.Mr. Editor, agree, on looking at my enclosed card, that I am qualified to utter an opinion, and I

unhesitatingly say that I have never operated under anyone whom I would prefer to Dr. Hatherly. Now there are a few things I would like to get at the truth of, viz.:—(l)'Is Dr. Hatherly the only house surgeon we have had at the local hospitaFwho has not had a death under anaesthetics? (2) Is it true that a case which was diagnosed Dy the medical man responsible as diphtheria was declared not to be so by Dr. Hathorly, and, on a swab covered with mucus from the patient's throat being sent to Wellington, no diphtheria germs wero discovered? (3) Did another socalled diphtheria case diagnosed by Dr. Hatherly as quinsy turn out to be quinsy? My information may be absolutely wrong, but somehow these rumours will ,get about, and if incorrect should be immediately denied. I am, etc., PROFESSIONAL.
