BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
MEETING OF WANGANUI AUXILIARY: A meeting of" the Wanganui Auxiliary of the Bible Society was held yesterday afternoon in St. Paul's Classroom. After various matters relating to the business and organisation of the Society had been dealt with, the Rev. F. H. Spencer made an urgent appeal for tho support of the Society's work. There were many appeals at the present time for special objects, but tho demand by all religious bodies and missionary societies, for supplies of the Scriptures, was a constant and everincreasing ono The aim of the Society was not merely to keep abreast of, but rather to act the part of pioneer to, ordinary missionary activity^- Ihr-^K" ject was to prepare the way for the missionary by translating, publishing and circulating copies of the Scriptures in new fields as fast as the opportunities offered for such work. The Society must havo a constant and adequate supply of funds at its command to enable it to carry on this advance work. To produce a version of the Bible in a new language required a sum of about £10,000 to meet tho expenses of translation alone, in addition to the cost of publishing and circulation. For th:':? initial expenditure the Society never received any return. Mr. Spencer appealed for a generous sunport of/ and interest in, the work of the Society, whoso _ services were sought for by Christian bodies, and missionary societies, of all denominations.
