NORTHERN LINE.

PATEA AND WAVERLEY. INDUCTION OF REV. PAYNE. SUCCESSFUL FIRE BRIGADE SOCIAL. WAVERLEY MAGISTRATES' COURT. DEFENCE DODGER FINED. WAIRQA SUB-UNION. Tho induction of the Rev. A. W. Payne as Vioar of the Patea Parochial District, will take place on September 9th next. The Bishop of Wellington and a largs number of clergymen will attend and take part in the ceremony. The Patea Fire Brigade social proved a gieat success. Everybody attended with great tantioipatiors of enjoyment, and it was one of those cases where expectations were fully realised. Tho floor was in first class order, and the music, in the hands of Mesdames Edwards, Mitchell and Miss Jacomb left nothing to bo desired. The M.C.'s, Captain Glenny, Lieutenant Adams and Fireman O. Carey were indefatigable in the efforts to see that everyone had an enjoyable i:'ma.

During supper extras were very kindly played by Misses Mitchell, Carey. Homer, and Mrs. Boagey. Prior to the commencement of the Waverley Court a feeling tribute was paid to the respect and high esteem in which the late Mr. G? D. Hamerton was held, by his fellow members of the legal profession. Mr. G. H. Graham said that by the death of his learned friend the legal fraternity generally had suffered irreparable loss. He bad been a man who had- served his King and country well—as a member of the Bar. and in divers ways. Mr. Kerr said that Mi*. Graham's sentiments would be heartily endorsed by all -who had known tho gentleman referred to. In the early days Mr. Hamerton had done yeoman service in the interests of the British against the hostile natives. .

At the Waverlev Magistrate's Court Thomas Oxley a defence defaulter was fined £1 and 7s. costs for haying failed to attend the camp at Oringi. ' Charles O'Reilly for having sheep infected with" lieo in his x>ossession, was fined 10s. 7s. costs. The defendant stated that he did not know that they were infected, having just bought them. The Inspector said that a charge was to b* Laid against tho previous--owyer. His Worshi- Mr. Kerr. said that it was of the utmost importance to the sheepfarming community that this kind of thing should be put down.

At the meeting of the Wairoa SnbUnion. August 2nd was accepted as the date for the Rep. match Wanganui v. Wairoa, at Waverley. Mr. M. A. Hunter was chosen as referee.

It. was decided to ask the selectors to be present at the senior match Waverley v. Waitotara, at Waitotara on 26th inst., and that tho Rop. team be picked that day. Tho suggestion m?.d* by the Wanganui Union to hold ;i. "knock out" contest was agreed to. same to be played simultaneously with tho third round matches.

In the "knock out" contest the four senior teams play off as set down in the first series of third round fixtures. The two winning teams play off on the next occasion .in which they meet in the ordinary championship' matches, the winners to be the team to play the Wanganui Union's champion team. The Rangitikei-Awarua sub-union teams follow the same procedure, and the winners play off with the winners of the Wanganui-Wairo champion teams match-

On account of tho Waitotara ground being unsuitable the Patea v. Waitotara senior third round match was ordered to be played at Waverley, and tho junior match Waverley v. Alton set down on tho Waverley ground on that day was ::>ut on at Patea. A most successful and enjoyable social was held under the auspices of the Waverle- Presbtyerian Ladies' Guild. Tho Rev. D. Mclvor presided and briefly explained the objects of the functino. the funds of which would go towards the liquidation of the hall debt fund. Tho programme was as follows: —Anther* choir (encored); violin solo, Master Clark (encored); recitations, Miss Mona Banks (encored)., Messrs. Marshall, Emslie, Mackay (all encored), pianoforte* solos, Misses F. Bremer. C. Dickie. Hodgo. Cavabill and Adlam : songs. Miss Hunter, Messrs. Daniells (encored), and Castles. After supper games were indulged in, and gceatly enjoyed.
