THE MANGATAINOKI LAND BALLOT.
SUCCESSFUL COMPETITORS
(Per Press' Association.)
PAHIATUA, July 18. The ballot for the Mangatainoki Block, comprising 1616 acres of first class dairying land, was conducted at Pahiatua to-day. Altogether 2662, applications were received from 372 applicants for the twenty-two sections offered ; but of theso a. large number were thrown out by the Land Board, the- actual number of applications that went to tho ballot being 1736. In the caso of single men who had applied for a section the Board rejected their applications for the first two sections they had applied for, and held them qualified for tho remaining sections for which they had entered. This (put the single men applicants on the same level as those who had been twice unsuccessful at former ballots.
In reply to Mr. R. B. Ross, ex-mem-ber for Pahiatua, who contended that the ballot was being illegally ■conducted, and forecasted a Supreme Court case, tho Commissioner declined to draw more than one marble. Mr. Ross said tho Board was ignoring tho law in not giving (preference to married persons or those who for two yeai's past had competed unsuccessfully in ballots. Tho Commissioner replied that tho Board was interpreting the law as it should be interpreted, in a liberal manner, and was allowing the sons of a great number of people in this district to go to tho ballot. The Board was not doing anything illegal, and if it was tho aggrieved persons had their remedy, (Applause.)
