HEAVY GALE IN THE NORTH.

SHIPPING DELAYED. - (Per Press Association i AUCKLAND, July 20. The Huddart-Parjjer steamer Victoria arrived at Auckland at 1 p.m. to-day from southern ports, after a stormy passage of over 25 hours from Gisborne. After rounding East Cape the vessel met they full force of a strong north-west gale, accompanied by high seas and fierce rain squalls. The gale raged throughout Saturday night, and the steamer's progress was considerably retarded. When approaching Hauraki Gulf the weather became so thick that the land marks could not be seen and the steamer accordingly slowed down until the weather cleared. The Huddart-Parker steamer Wimmera, bound from Sydney to Auckland, which was expected here at 2 p.m. to-day, advised by wireless that she is meeting with heavy weather in the Tasman Sea and will not arrive until early on Monday morning. The north-west gale which raged on Saturday and Sunday considerably delayed shipping. l The Mokoia and Rosamond worked tinder difficulties on Saturday morning, but got away to time in the afternoon. Loading operations on the Otaki were also considerably interfered with. Coastal steamers were also delayed by the gale and arrived somewhat later than ordinary time.
