AUCKLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 19. The Wellington Rugby fifteen played Auckland to-day for the Ranfurly Shield, and suffered defeat by six points —ia penalty goal and an unconverted try—to five points—a converted try. A strong wind blew almost straight down the field, and heavy rain fell almost continuously. Wellington had the wind in the first spell and had Auckland defending most of the time. Tho first try came after thirty-seven minutes' play. Roberts secured from a loose forward rush, and the ball went to. Mackenzie, Kinvig and Mitchison, who beat Mackay. and scored a brilliant try. Evenson converted The visitors continued to press, but found O'Leary, tho full back, was a, stumbling block. Evenson had a fruitless attempt at goal. The second half opened with -Wellington attacking, but long kicking by tho Auckland backs Kept them off. O'Leary had a fruitless shot at goal, but had a, successful shot soon afterwards. During one of Auckland's sudden rushes, the deciding try was secured from a high punt from half way by Mackenzie. Kinvig mulled and Nesbit scored. O'Leary failed with the kick. Most of tho play was in Auckland's half, Wellington having slightly tho better of tho game.
