BAD ROADS

MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL,

(From our Travelling Reporter.) MARTON, July 15. Owing to increased business, Marton Borough Council has decided to meet fortnightly instead of monthly, as hitherto. At the request of the Marton Beauti-

fying Society the Borough Council has given, its permission to the society to appij*, through Mr Newman, M.P., for two obsolete field pieces for the p/irk. An accident occurred on the railway line near the Marton Junction station yards this morning, when a horse I>elongirig to Mr J. Dawson was struck by the engin-.j of the incoming tnain from Taihapo, and' so injured that it had to be destroyed. The horse, it anpears, was enclosed in on c of the railway paddocks, and by some means got through the fence and strayed on to the line. J. Robertson and Son, who run pictiires at Marton and rent the Town Hali for the same, have again written to the Borough Council alleging injust'wn. by compelling them to stand, aside in favour of visiting companies when they happen to want it. on either Wednesday or Saturday nights. The writers point out that all their arrangements have been permanently made, and as the programmes come along in due course, they have to be naid for whether used or not. Their losses lately as the result of itinerant companies, they estimated at £10. They asked that their mghts be seated to them in such a way taat they will neither have to stand aside in favour of others or be called upon to pay a higher rent for the privilege of showing on the night applied for. Consideration of the application has been adjourned until th c next meeting. The condition of the roads in Marton indicates the class of metal that is being procured, and it is not surprising that Mr Wilson, the borough foreman, •felt it his duty to draw the attention oi the Council to the need of procuring a fresh metal pit owing to the presence of so much clay in the present one. Ihe metal in consequence was not worth carting out. Be recommended Mr Kirch-s metal pit as the best procurable in the borough. The gas manager reported that during the month 11 gas services hav o been laidand two water connections. The month!? meeting of the Marton Borough Coaiscilwias held last evening i G1^ there were Present, his Worship ,he Mayor, Councillors Wilde, Sutcliffe Lewis, Sinclair Ingle and Lloyd.
