DRUNKENNESS IN WANGANUI.

(To the Editor.) , 7 Si rj __When 1 made >a few. remarks in Friday's.issue with regard to the control of_ liquor in Wanganui, it was not 'with" the intention of entering into a controversy, but simply to state a few facts gained from observation and perusal of the S.M. Court news in the local papers—:not fiction, as "A Lover of Fairness" would have, your leaders believe in his grossly/unfair mis-state-ments. He says he is not a, "wowser," but a ',' No-License" mati. This is surely a peculiar statement to make ifflasmuch as the definition is generally looked upon as synonymous by those opposed to No-license, but the veneer, is too thin. He makes the misleading statement that I suggeste:! that Wanganui is ia drunken - community, whereajs I stated that "it was apparent -to any unbiassed person that there was more dr,ink consumed here than was good for those consumers who make themselves obnbxious in public places n^" to'*be locked upV; For instance, a few; days back a drunken man /was fined' for ridding a horse <>n the footpatlv and. another one wtas prosecuted for entering the Wanganui Public Rteading-room and "taking a:nothe£ man's overcoat,.as reported in .the^papers. If Jt.. was not excessivs v\ drinking that caused these men to place themselves in the" hands of the law,' what in /the mariie'of goodness -was it? It is-, simply hriimbiig for "A Lover of Fairness 7-, to* "write in-the strain he did, .as 'to didL not keep to the''facts..- To quote anold niaxim:. "There are rione"-so blind iis those who won't .see, , It. would requijre an axe to let daylight, into the thick1 skulls of some people." "A Lover of Fairness" i'g either very dull of comprehension or i;-4 trying to hoodwink the public .—I am, etc., ...-■■,.-.•; « H.H.W." , :
