BUSY DAY IN WANGANUI.

• SEVEN ISSUES BEFORE THE PUBLIC,

MR. T. B. WILLIAMS ELECTED MAYOR

THURSDAY HALF-H'

Wanganui electors yesterday had an experience of the-new system of combining all. thS' year's voting into one day. All electors had five issues to decide, and pome ratepayers had seven. iMiich interest, was taken, as everyone elicited a keen concern in one or other of the polls, and therefore the number who recorded their votes was large. Before n*ine o'clock, when it was ex- : pected that the results would be announced, a large crowd assembled at the Drill Hall, the principal booth. Many had a dreary wait v It was after eleven before some of the results could .•be made known. A small crowd still "waited at midnight, when the last of ■ the speeches from successful and unsuccessful candidates was made.' The heavy polling yesterday was responsible ifor the delay. As will be seen from the figures, the Borough Cotincil - Chambei's . were particularly well pat-•-remised for some reason or other. It

was not the main booth, and consequently was not staffed to meet the demands. While other booths were also later than was expected in sending in their returns, owing to the heavy polling on the many issues, the Council Chambers returns were last. The crowd, however, waited very patiently. The first results were announced by the Mayor.' They were the lodn proposals, as follows :—- ---WANGANUI EAST TRAMWAYS EXTENSION.
