TAIHAPE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

In conversation «, prominent sheep owner thoroughly endorsed the remark.3 made by mo in a recent issue re the establishment of freezing works in or near Taihape. From a sheep owner's point of view there would be a considerable saving in freight -and handling and less of sheep in transit. From, the point of view of the business people of the town the advantages are many and obvious, the main pno being that the wages which are now paid for killing and freezing sheep bred in the Taihape district would be spent in the district instead of at Petone and other towns. The establishment of industries to titilise the bye-products would also give to the district- what is required to establish the stability of any town, namely, manufactures. Taihapo could bo made an important manufacturing town, with soap and candle works, fell-mongeries, meat works, etc. The Rangitikei A. and P. Association have invited applications for the position of secretary, vice Mr. H. J. Jaggard, who is resigning from the position. Mr. G. McLeod, of the local police force, is at present on leave of absence, and is visiting his mother, who resides at Seacliff, Otago. Mr. Law, while driving out with the Taoroa and Mokai mails, narrowly escaped from a serious accident, last week. Whilst on the outward journey he met a mob of cattle; at which the horses shied and overturned the mail cart on the roadside. Mr. Law had.the small bono of his right leg broken, and his colki^-bons disloKvted. He gamely stuck to his round, which he completed, and -was attended at his home by Dr: Barnett, and is now progressing satisfactorily. Dr. Hutson, the newly-appointed resident medical officer in charge of the Taihape Hospital, has arrived in the town, and promises to bo' very popular here. A meeting for the purpose of promoting a Hospital ball has been convened by Messrs. A. James. F. McLaughlan, and C. L. Dymock. With these three popular and energetic jsen'tlemlen -syt the head of affairs, the ball is bound to be a great success. The object is also one that will apneal to all. In other towns the Hospital Ball is usually the best ball of the season, both socially and financially, and the same results will, no doubt', be achieved here. The local company of Territorials, H. Regiment, will go into camp at Orino-i from the 14th to 26th April.. They depart from Taihape by the 6 a.m. train on the 14th instant. Residents of Taihape will bs disappointed at the stoppage of the midnight express to Wellington. This train put Wellington, and Auckland both within convenient limits to Taihane, as a traveller could reach either place from Taihape by travelling ot night. | However, ths night, train did not receive the support of the public, and being run at a loss must nocossariTv coino off.
