SWIMMING.

MR. BUCKRELL'S MEDALS. (By "CRAWL.") The 50 yards race for the above handsome meda!s for those who had never won a prize, was swum off last evening in tho Corporation baths. ]>- spito tho most unfavourable climatic conditions experienced so far this season, nine swimmers faced the chilly blast and the freezing water, and a fine race resulted. The winner turned "up in Gordon Armstrong (9secs.), Downer (7secs.) being second, and Roche (5 sees.), and Hardy (ser.) tied for third place. Tho winner was about a foot ahead of Downer, who fouched jnst ahead of Roche and Hardy. Five yards from home Rocho came- through tho ruck and appeared to have tho raco well in hand, but although he responded well to Hardy's lato"challenge, he failed to improvo his position. Time, 38secs. Tho following also started :—W. Oummins (scr.), R. Thomas (9secs.) T. Crotty (4seos.), R. Hollis (ißsecs.). Hardy has been tho most unfortunate swimmer of tho .season, havinjr had to I>3 content with a second or third on nearly every occasion. I hope to sco him land the goods on Wednesday evening. Mr. J. C. M. Stewart, whose generosity and enthusiasm have been the pre-

vailing notes of tho now fast closing season, has presented a handsomely engraved medal Tor a, 75 yards race to foe- held on Wednesday evening. Swimmers are beginning to recover somewhat from the period of stagnation which set in. after the championship meeting-was concluded, and speaking generally, the lads may be said to bo much keener now than at any time during the season. The race for Stewart' trophy, therefore, should foe one calling lor a swimmer's best qualities, and a slashing go may be anticipated.
