HIGGINBOTTOM TROPHY, 440 YARDS.

A field of six faced the starter for the above event "last evening, and a fine race resulted. The following were the handicaps;—Muller scr., Thomas 5 sscs., Hardy lOseos^Swan 20secs., Mitchell 25secs., G. Armstrong 30s*cs. The limit men mad© every advantage of their starts, and when Muller entered the water, Armstrong was about 40 yards ahead, Swan and Mitchell were swimming together, and Hardy was not tar behind. The last-named was going strongly and steadily, and at the 220 = yards was easily 70 yards ahead of i Muljer and after a lap or two more me had improved his position censid- ' erably, having overhauled Mitchell and i -Swan, and being well in the van. The race seemed to be as good us won by Hardy, but to the surprise of all, he withdrew from the race at the 300 yards mark.
