The House of Commons was crowded. Th/?re were two thousand police iii attendance outside the building. The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith said the Speaker's ruling was unexpected. The Government had considered ths point, and believed precedents justified their action. Ho denied that there had b&en any sharp practice, but it would bo useless to continue discussion on Sir E. Grey's amendment. The Government would proceed with electoral reform during the present, Parliament, and would give facilities ¥or a private Women's Franchise Bill next session.

The Cabinet is withdrawing the Franchise Bill.

Sir Edward Grey's, amendment proposes to omit the -word "male" from tbt Bill, thus affirming the principle ■of female suffrage.
