Pearce, Defence Minister, speaking at the Government dockyard employees' picnic, said: .'•' We do not intend to allow the question of riaval development to rest where it is. , We are only on the fringe. The future will be big. apparently, to anyone who looks ahead. Wo are the predominating white race in the South Pacific. Including Nc>v Zealand we airje the only white race. If the whites are to play any part in the history of th.9Pacific, that part will be played by Australasians. That is a tremendous i responsibility, but I believe Australasia J will be capable of. rising thereto and fulfilling its d^sstiny." He* says that ' Australia will spend fiv*> and a-half j niillrons on the navy in 191-3.
