THE WANGANTJI'S VICTIMS
THIS YEAR'S RED ROLL
Tho Wanganui River has claimed four victims since the commencement of this year, making an average death of one in less than a week. This i» really a disastrous record. Drowning is called the Now Zealand death, ana co far as the present year at least is concerned, the Dominion, and Wanganui in particular, has been keeping up its name but too well. Since January Ist, no less than thirty-four persons have met their fate by drowning, of which the Wanganui claims four victims.
The fatalities in New Zealand average over one a day. Deaths by drowning to data have occurred at the following places :—Wanganui 4, Aohanga 4, Bangitata 2, Dunedin 2, New Brighton 2, Sumner 2, Gisborne 2, Hukatere 1. Morrinsville 1, Mokau 1, Masterton 1, Waimauka 1, Waipawa 1, Christchurch 5, Mania 1, Grey-mouth 1, Omata 1, Te Wera 1, and Okere 1. Total, 34. When one takes into consideration tha fact that so many narrow cßcapeff ihave foen reported at Cast-lecliff, Wanganui has every reason ■to be proud of ite Surf Club. On the beach, there have been no fatalities this year. In the river, when there is no surf club to operate, there have been four separate cases of drowning. The list of the Wanganui's victims is as follows:—
January 9th.—J. W. Brady, drowned off s.s. Wairere.
January 12th—J. W. Dingle, drowned off~ the coal wharf.
January 13th.—A. H. Campbell, drowned at Aramoho.
January 25th. —Wm. G. Brown, drowned in yachting mishap off Carlton.
