FOUR MEN DROWNED.
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27
A boating accident occurred at Saltwater Creek yesterday, four men being drowned. A party was trawling near the north bank and entered a punt to cross to tho southern side. A southwest wind made the water choppy. There were seven men in the punt. Water was shipped, and the boat capsized. The members of the party were clothed. John Ashby (Sefton),, who was wearing waders, got ashore. William Clark (Sefton) swam ashore, and Matthew Gallagher (Christchureh) clung to the boat. The other four —Frank Powell, Leslie Barker, Robert llapson (all of Sefton), and Frederick Challis (Christchurch) —were- drowned. Powell was middle-aged, and leaves a widow and oight children. Challis leaves a widow and .a child four months old. All the bodies except that of Challis were found this morning.
The bodies of Francis Powell, Leslie Parker and Frederick Challis were reeovcosd early this morning at 1 o'clock, when the tide was low.
