QUININE Quite an interesting story is attached to the discovery of the medicinal value of Qumiftej obtained from thefoark of tho Cinchona Tree of the South Amen. -sin Andes. •In • the " year 1693, the Countess of Cinehon (wife of tho th&n Viceroy of Peru) was journeying across these remote mountain ranges, and fell seriously ill. While seeking shade and rest beneath a tree, the Countess (aft&r whom the Cinchona tree was named) drank frequently from a pool, into which largo pieces •of the tree's ibark had fallen.
